Shelter Team Lead

PROGRAM: Lethbridge Wellness Shelter & Stabilization Unit (LWSSU)
REPORTING TO: Shelter Coordinator
SUMMARY OF WORK:
The Shelter Team Lead provides day-to-day leadership and operational oversight of shelter
services, ensuring a safe, respectful, supportive, and well-organized environment for shelter
guests, staff, volunteers, and partner organizations. The position supervises frontline staff,
coordinates daily shelter operations, responds to incidents and emergencies, and supports the
delivery of trauma-informed, culturally safe, client-centred services. The successful candidate
demonstrates strong leadership, communication, conflict-resolution, and crisis-management
skills and is able to make sound decisions in a fast-paced shelter environment. Ability to work in
a 24/7 shelter environment, including evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as
required
PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL QUALITIES:
- Education in Addictions and Mental Health, Health Sciences, or a related field is
considered an asset. - 2–3 years of experience working in a high-risk environment, such as healthcare, lowincome services, homeless shelters, or other community-based settings, is preferred.
- Personal experience with addiction recovery and the ability to draw upon wellness and
recovery experiences when providing intentional peer support is considered an asset. - Valid First Aid Certification is required, or you must be willing to acquire within 6
months of hiring; training may be provided. - Naloxone/Narcan training is required, or you must be willing to acquire within 6 months
of hiring; training may be provided. - Monitor the shelter environment and proactively identify safety concerns.
- Respond to emergencies, medical situations, behavioural concerns, conflicts, and other
critical incidents. - De-escalate challenging situations using appropriate communication and crisisintervention techniques. NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) Certification is required,
or you must be willing to acquire within 6 months of hiring; training may be provided. - Follow emergency procedures and contact emergency services when required.
- Ensure incidents are documented accurately and reported to management according to
organizational policy. - Support staff in maintaining a safe environment for everyone in the shelter.
- Flexible and reliable with availability for rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights,
and weekends. - Must act with integrity and treat all information regarding guests, emergency medical
personnel, service providers, employees, and the financial and operational status of the
Organization as confidential. - Serve as a key communication link between frontline staff and management.
SALARY RANGE:
- In accordance with the Blood Tribe Department of Health Inc. Salary Grid.
