SUMMARY:Wellness Program Ceremonial Maotokiiks Prayer
DESCRIPTION:The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation\, observed annually on September 30\, is a day to reflect on the painful legacy of residential schools in Canada. It honors the children who never returned home\, the survivors\, their families\, and communities. This day is also known as Orange Shirt Day\, inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school. The event serves as a reminder that “Every Child Matters\,” emphasizing the importance of affirming the value and experiences of Indigenous children and addressing the harms done to them. \nThis day plays a vital role in Canada’s ongoing journey toward healing and reconciliation\, providing an opportunity for all Canadians to engage in meaningful dialogue\, education\, and actions that support the 94 Calls to Action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. \nEvent Schedule:\nSeptember 24\, 2024 \n\nSunrise Ceremony\nBegin the day in prayer and reflection with a Sunrise Ceremony.\nCommemorative Relay Run\nA symbolic run to honor the lives affected by residential schools.\nFeast\nAll are welcome to join us for a community feast at the Wellness Program.\n\nSeptember 25 & 26\, 2024 \n\nHats & Pins\nCommemorative hats and pins will be available for community members on a first-come\, first-served basis while supplies last.\n\nSeptember 27\, 2024 \n\nCeremonial Maotokiiks Prayer\nA special prayer ceremony to honor our community’s children.\nTreat Bags for Children\nTreats will be distributed to children following the ceremony.\n\nWhy We Remember\nThe residential school system left deep scars on Indigenous communities. Many children were forcibly taken from their families\, enduring emotional\, physical\, and spiritual harm. As we gather for these events\, we acknowledge that healing is ongoing. Our ceremonies\, runs\, and community gatherings not only honor those impacted by these schools but also serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that these atrocities are never forgotten. \nSpecial Thanks\nWe extend our heartfelt gratitude to all IRS survivors\, Elders\, and community members who contribute to these events. Your participation helps us reflect on the past and continue the important work of reconciliation.
